This section describes the infrastructure, operational framework and history of EGNOS.


EGNOS’ infrastructure comprises of a ground network of 39 ranging and integrity monitoring stations (RIMS), six navigation land earth stations (NLES), two mission control centres and signal transponders on three geostationary satellites (two Inmarsat III and IV satellites and one SES ASTRA GEO satellite SES-5).

European citizens own EGNOS. The European Commission took over ownership of EGNOS’ infrastructure from the European Space Agency on behalf of the European Union on 1 April 2009. Since 1st January 2014, EGNOS exploitation is fully delegated by the European Commission to the GSA.
